Up Close and Personal with Lucy Whiteside
Introduction
Hello Book Lovers,
#MeetTheAuthorMonday and we are so much closer than we think to the now to the Lyde Court Book Event.
Today we will get ‘up close and personal’ with Specialist Children’s Dietitian & Author Lucy Whiteside
Lucy will be joining us for The Lyde Court Book Fayre HR1 3AE on Saturday 23rd May 2026.
She was sent a selection of questions not necessarily to do with her books but just to get to know her a little better. So, without further ado, here are the questions Lucy's chose to complete:
Childhood
As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
As a child, I dreamed of being a children’s TV presenter
But my parents weren’t so keen on that path… so I studied science and went on to get a degree in dietetics to become a Dietitian.
Now I’m a children’s dietitian, and I spend my days mixing food science with storytelling, being silly, and helping children see food in a completely different way…
So, I guess I wasn’t too far off
Fantasy
If you could have a super power, what would it be and what would you do with it?
If I had a superpower, I’d have a magic wand that sprinkles confidence and curiosity onto food
Helping children feel safe, explore, and unlock the magic inside every bite.
If you could be a big screen character from Disney who would you be and why?
I’d probably be Moana
She’s curious, driven, and follows her own path… but with a little bit of Rapunzel’s creativity and chaos thrown in
Work/Writing
Do you have any writing superstitions?
My writing superstition? I always start in the middle of the story and let it grow from there… and I have to have a cup of tea beside me, with the spoon still in
Relaxation
What are your favourite hobbies?
I love being outdoors, paddleboarding with my daughter, going on long walks, and getting gloriously muddy along the way with my boy and our dogs
Personal
What is the best thing you’ve done in your life so far?
The best thing I’ve done is travel, from sleeping on rivers to kayaking at sunrise in Thailand to reading a book with orangutans in Borneo to watching sunset on New Year’s eve on a snowmobile on a mountain top in Norway… moments like that stay with you forever.
Is there anything else you would like readers to know about you?
I’m Lucy, children’s dietitian, author, and the face behind Flourish Kids.
And my purpose is simple:
to change the way children see food.
To take away fear.
To build confidence.
To spark curiosity.
Because if a child can feel safe around food…
everything else starts to grow from there.
And if I can help even one child feel that little bit braver…
Then I know I’m exactly where I’m meant to be, one bite at a time or one book at time!
The Amazing Fruitables and the Ice Cream Thieves
When the mischievous Ice Cream Thieves threaten Nutri-Ville, a team of colourful fruit and vegetable friends must discover their true powers. But they quickly realise something important….
They are strongest when they work together.
Through teamwork, courage and a little food science magic, children learn how nutrients like calcium and vitamin D combine to build strong bodies woven seamlessly into a fun, fast-paced adventure.
No lectures.
No guilt.
Just storytelling that plants seeds.
