Up Close and Personal with Esther Stevens

Introduction

Hello Book Lovers,

Week eight and it is that time again for #MeetTheAuthorMonday

Today we will get ‘up close and personal’  with the talented children's author Esther Stevens, who will be joining us for 'The Little Hedgehogs Book Fayre' at Ross-on-Wye Library Thursday 2nd April 2026.

We sent Esther a selection of questions not necessarily to do with her books but just to get to know her a little  better.  So, without further ado, here are the questions Esther chose to complete:

Childhood

What is the best thing you dressed up as on ‘World Book Day’ or ‘Halloween’?

The best thing I've dressed up as for World Book Day was last year when I dressed up as Paddington Bear. Working in a school gives me a great reason to dress up regularly. The children love it.

Fantasy

If you were a mythical creature from folklore or fairytale, what would you be and why?

If I could be any mythical creature, I would be a phoenix. I've risen from the ashes many times,  that haven't just challenged me but transformed me. I have an inner fire that comes out, so never underestimate me.

Work/Writing

Tell us about your writing environment. Is it indoors or in the great outdoors?  What is on your desk, table, lap? Hot or cold drink, any snacks, views etc.?

My writing environment tends to be indoors. I particularly like it when it's raining outside. I close the curtains, light a fire, make a hot coffee, open my laptop, and start. If it's sunny, I will be outdoors walking the dog in the forest.

Relaxation

What is your favourite season? What do you look forward to doing most of all during this season?

My favourite season has been and always will be Autumn. I love the way the colours of the leaves change. Even though I know why they change now, as a little girl I always believed that it was a magical autumn fairy that changed them into wonderful vibrant colours. I will always be excited by Autumn.

Personal

What is the best thing you’ve done in your life so far?

The best thing I have done in my life has to be having my children. Both are Neurodivergent and that comes with many challenges and struggles. But I wouldn't change them for anything. They inspire me every day and are the purpose for my writing.

Derek the Angry Dinosaur

Derek is only a little dinosaur, but sometimes he has big emotions that are hard to handle. His cheeks become hot, and he gets a funny churning in his stomach that isn’t nice to feel.

When a game of hide and seek goes wrong, Derek’s anger erupts and feelings are hurt. He needs to find a way to control his temper before he pushes his friends away for good, but he doesn’t know where to start.

Derek the Angry Dinosaur is the perfect story to share with any child who has the same big feelings and who wants to find the calm amidst the storm. So, join Derek in his journey to discover which tool works best when he feels his anger rising.
