Up Close and Personal with Cheryl Burman

Introduction

Hello Book Lovers, how has #NationalYearOfReading been for you? Charlotte L. Taylor and I are really excited as time is flying by and we will soon be celebrating reading with Herefordshire Libraries commencing with Simon in Ross-on-Wye. We cannot wait for 'The Little Hedgehogs Book Fayre' Thursday 2nd April 2026.

So, if you have been following us you will see we have been introducing you to some of the wonderful authors who will be joining us for the Book Fayre.

This is week five of our #MeetTheAuthorMonday blog posts, so please give a warm welcome to Cheryl Burman. All the authors joining in with our interviews, are sent a selection of questions, not necessarily to do with the books they write but more to get ‘up close and personal’. So, without further ado, here are the questions Cheryl chose to complete:

Childhood

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

As a child I always wanted to be a teacher, in between wanting to be a librarian. The teacher dream died in my last year of school, as I'd had enough. Not sure what happened to the librarian!

Fantasy

If you were a mythical creature from folklore or fairytale, what would you be and why?

It would have to be a gryphon, because that's the creature I chose to feature in my middle grade fantasy trilogy. My gryphons are wise, and courageous, and can beat the blazes out of the enemy!

Work/Writing

What is the wallpaper on your pc/laptop? Is it a random choice or do you have a special reason for it to be there?

The wallpaper on my PC is an image of my beloved border collie, Sam, who was also an author. The two of us wrote a book of dog walks in the Forest of Dean, which (updated regularly) still sells, thirteen years on. 'Sammy's Walks: Dog friendly walks in the Forest of Dean'.

Relaxation

What is your favourite season? What do you look forward to doing most of all during this season?

My favourite season is spring, because the parks and gardens, and the forest, come to life with wild daffodils, wild garlic, bluebells, and hedgerows bursting with colour. I walk a lot, and spring is my favourite walking time.

Personal

What is the best thing you’ve done in your life so far?

The best thing I've done in my life? Apart from giving birth to my two wonderful children, now grown, it's certainly been scratching the itch of writing I've had all my life, and never dealt with until I was in my 60s.

Extras

Is there anything else you would like readers to know about you?

I don't only write middle grade, and in fact half of my books are more for grownups. Some of them are set in the Forest of Dean and some in my home country of Australia.

Ntombi, A Rhinos Story

When a warlord invades their Forest home, Callie, Gwen & Mark find allies in unexpected places. The Guardian is dead, her successor a mere baby. The wild creatures will fight, but will the son of the destroyer betray his father to join them? A fantasy trilogy for ages 9 and up, and up.

The Wild Army: Guardians of the Forest Book One

Callie’s forest rings to the thwack of enemy axes. Her people are trapped. Their leaders scoff at her warnings of the Danae’s fate at the hands of the invaders - their Forest razed and themselves sold as fairytale slaves. When Callie searches for help in the secret places of the forest, she discovers her own magic. Will it be enough? The gryphon who watched over the forest is dying, her successor a mere baby. The wild creatures will fight.

Quests: Guardians of the Forest Book Two

The invading Madach have discovered the Danae villages and Gwen and Mark flee into the perilous Deep Forest. They must find the Sleih, who may or may not be a myth, and who may or may not help as, so village lore proclaims, they helped the Danae once before - for a price. And where is their lost sister, Lucy? Has she fallen foul of the robber Madach who capture Gwen and Mark?

While the brother and sister battle the dangers of the Deep Forest, an ambitious and powerful Seer hunts for them, desperate to thwart their quest.

Gryphon Magic: Guardians of the Forest Book Three

Will Gwen, Mark and Lucy be in time to save the Danae from their fate as fairytale slaves?

Callie, the wild creatures, and the young gryphon harass the Madach tree-fellers with secret help from Tristan. But the invaders’ ships steadily fill with timber. Now there is only room left in the holds for the even richer cargo of Danae fairytale slaves.

Lady Melda plots to steal Gwen’s gryphon pendant, for once she has that, all her ambitions for power will be fulfilled.

Gwen, Mark and Lucy hurry home with the Sleih rescuers, facing old enemies and gathering new allies. But when they reach the Forest, they find ruin and desolation.

Can Lady Melda be stopped? Can the Danae be saved? Can the Forest be redeemed from the invaders’ destruction?
